What employers look for
Mechanical engineering covers very different jobs. A maintenance engineer in a food factory, a design engineer at an automotive parts supplier and a project engineer installing HVAC systems in a hospital all have the same degree, but their hiring managers look for different evidence. Decide which kind of role you are applying for and write the resume for that reader.
- Maintenance and reliability roles: equipment you looked after, how you reduced breakdowns and downtime, and how you planned preventive maintenance.
- Project roles: the size and type of projects, your part in them, and whether they finished on time, on budget and safely.
- Design roles: what you designed, the software you used, the analysis behind it, and whether it went into production.
- In every role: safe working habits, clear reports and the ability to work with technicians, contractors and suppliers.
Name the industry and the equipment
Engineers move between industries, but hiring managers still feel more confident when they recognise your environment. Say where you worked and on what: an injection moulding line, a gas compression package, chillers and air-handling units, cleanroom tools in a semiconductor plant, or press and welding lines for car parts.
This matters in Malaysia because the main employers of mechanical engineers sit in distinct sectors — manufacturing, oil and gas, building services and HVAC, semiconductor and electrical and electronics (E&E), and automotive. Using the vocabulary of the sector you are applying to, such as “OEE” in manufacturing or “shutdown” and “turnaround” in oil and gas, shows you already understand the work.
Sample resume, section by section
This example is for a mechanical engineer with about six years of experience moving towards a senior maintenance or project role. The name, companies and figures are illustrations — replace them with your own, and only include numbers you can explain.

Experience 1: Maintenance Engineer, Selatan Precision Components Sdn Bhd (fictional), Penang, 2022 – present.
- Look after 45 CNC machines, two air compressors and the plant’s cooling system with a team of six technicians across two shifts.
- Rebuilt the preventive maintenance schedule around actual failure history, reducing unplanned downtime on the main machining line from about 30 to 12 hours a month.
- Led root cause analysis on repeated spindle failures and changed the lubrication routine, which ended the failures over the following year.
- Managed a compressor replacement project worth RM350,000, from specification and supplier selection to commissioning during a planned shutdown.
- Wrote lockout-tagout procedures for every machine and trained technicians on them, with no lost-time injuries in the maintenance team since.

Experience 2: Mechanical Engineer, Kemuncak Building Services Sdn Bhd (fictional), Kuala Lumpur, 2019 – 2022.
- Prepared HVAC and plumbing layouts in AutoCAD for four commercial buildings, coordinating with architects and electrical engineers.
- Calculated cooling loads and selected chillers, pumps and air-handling units for an office tower renovation.
- Supervised installation subcontractors on site and checked work against drawings before testing and commissioning.
- Compiled handover documents and as-built drawings, so the building owner’s maintenance team had a complete record from day one.
Education, registration and skills
Education: Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, name of university, 2019. Add your final-year project in one line if it relates to the job.
Registration and certifications: Graduate Engineer, Board of Engineers Malaysia, with your registration number. Add industry certificates you hold, such as a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt, and any site safety training your target employers require.
Skills: Software — AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Microsoft Excel, a maintenance management system (name the one you used) · Methods — preventive maintenance, root cause analysis, FMEA, 5S · Equipment — CNC machines, compressors, chillers, pumps · Languages — English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin.
Showing professional registration correctly
Engineering in Malaysia is regulated by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Engineering graduates register with BEM as a Graduate Engineer, and after gaining practical experience and passing a professional assessment, can apply to become a Professional Engineer, which allows use of the title “Ir.” before your name.
On your resume, state your exact current status and registration number, because employers can check it. Do not write “Ir.” or “Professional Engineer” until you are registered as one; if you are preparing for assessment, “working towards Professional Engineer registration” is honest and useful. Membership of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) can go in the same section.
Show results in cost, downtime and safety
Engineering managers think in a few measures: how long equipment was down, how much it cost, how safe the work was and whether the project finished on time. Translate your work into those terms wherever you can.
- Downtime: hours of unplanned stoppage before and after, mean time between failures, or how quickly a breakdown was restored.
- Cost: spare parts or energy saved, contractor costs avoided by doing work in-house, or project spend against budget.
- Safety: incidents reduced, procedures written, permits and risk assessments you were responsible for, or audits passed.
- Quality and output: scrap rate, rework or output per shift, where your change made the difference.
Summary examples by situation
- Junior: “Mechanical engineering graduate with a six-month internship in a semiconductor plant’s facilities team, where I helped track chiller performance and update maintenance records. Confident in AutoCAD and SolidWorks and registered as a Graduate Engineer with BEM.”
- Experienced: “Project engineer with eight years in oil and gas, delivering piping and rotating equipment work during plant shutdowns. Used to coordinating contractors under permit-to-work systems and handing over complete documentation on schedule.”
- Career changer: “Maintenance technician moving into an engineering role after completing a part-time engineering degree. Ten years of hands-on experience with pumps, compressors and conveyors gives me a practical view of what makes equipment reliable.”
Strong bullet examples by area
Example figures — replace them with your own.
- Maintenance: “Introduced vibration checks on critical pumps, catching two bearing failures before they caused a line stoppage.”
- Maintenance: “Reduced spare parts stock by listing critical spares with the store team and removing parts for equipment already scrapped.”
- Reliability: “Analysed a year of breakdown records to rank the ten worst machines, and used the list to focus the maintenance budget.”
- Projects: “Delivered the installation of a new production line on schedule, coordinating four contractors and the client’s safety team.”
- Projects: “Prepared tender specifications and compared supplier bids for a cooling tower replacement, recommending the option with the lowest lifetime cost.”
- Design: “Redesigned a fixture in SolidWorks to hold two parts instead of one, cutting machining cycle time on that product.”
- Design: “Ran static stress analysis in ANSYS on a lifting bracket before fabrication, which led to a thicker base plate and a design that passed load testing.”
- HVAC: “Rebalanced the air distribution in a mall’s food court after tenant complaints, bringing temperatures back within the design range.”
- Energy: “Fixed compressed air leaks found in a plant-wide survey and switched off compressors during non-production hours, lowering the electricity bill.”
- Safety: “Wrote risk assessments and method statements for work at height during a roof equipment replacement, completed with no incidents.”
- Leadership: “Supervised a team of eight technicians on shifts and introduced handover notes so no open job was lost between shifts.”
Tools: be specific and honest
List the software you would be comfortable using in a technical test — commonly AutoCAD for 2D drawings, SolidWorks or another 3D CAD package for modelling, and ANSYS or similar for simulation if you have actually run analyses. Add the maintenance or ERP system you used, because many plants rely on one. If you only used a tool during university, say so in your project description rather than listing it alongside daily tools.
Common mistakes
- Copying the job description of your role instead of describing what you changed.
- Long lists of equipment with no indication of what you did with it.
- Writing “Ir.” or “PE” before you are registered as a Professional Engineer.
- Leaving out safety, which every engineering manager checks.
- Using internal plant codes and abbreviations that an outside reader won’t recognise.
